How the program works
The mechanics of Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS)
Declining CI targets
Obligated fuel suppliers must hold a zero-or-positive balance of compliance units each year; low-CI fuels like electricity earn credits.
Electricity earns credits
EV charging network owners generate credits from every kWh dispensed to vehicles.
Annual compliance
Reporting is annual, with the compliance report due March 31 for the prior year, filed through the LCFS Portal.
Infrastructure & initiative agreements
B.C. adds incentives for ZEV infrastructure and has channeled over CA$2 billion into clean-fuel and infrastructure projects.

What's new in British Columbia
Low Carbon Fuels Act (in effect January 2024)
Replaced the Greenhouse Gas Reduction (Renewable & Low Carbon Fuel Requirements) Act and raised the CI target to 30% by 2030.
ZEV infrastructure & CCUS crediting
New credit opportunities for EV charging and hydrogen infrastructure, plus carbon capture, utilization and storage.
Canadian production requirement
From April 2025, eligible renewable fuel in the diesel category must be produced in Canada, and minimum renewable content increased.
